USD 247 Southeast serves the communities of Cherokee, McCune, Weir, and West Mineral along with a large rural area in southeastern Kansas. Southeast is home to the Lancers. Lancers are known to be leaders and protect the community. In accordance with our namesake, USD 247 leads the way in several educational areas. Our district was at the forefront of 1-1 laptops and we were the first in southeast Kansas to provide 1-1 iPads to students.  We immerse our students in a technology-rich environment that includes the use of iPads, laptops, virtual learning, interactive distance learning, and most recently, Chromebooks, 1-1, in our middle school and elementary school.

We are a small rural school district with several advantages. Our small numbers enable our classes to serve students in a low student-teacher ratio, and our students and staff welcome newcomers from all backgrounds and interests. Although our numbers are small, our students have the opportunities to learn and compete in the areas of business, technology, and agriculture at the state and national level. Our business students run a small business called the “Lancer Latte”, selling coffee and other items and learning all aspects of running that business, from ordering and preparing drinks to waiting on customers and figuring profit and loss.  Our technology students regularly compete and place at the state and national level in the areas of robotics, programming, and videography. We have recently acquired a 3D printer and a drone to learn about the newest technology. The local vocational technology programs enable students to learn and certify as welders, bricklayers, auto body technicians and auto mechanics, employable at graduation.

Our district uses the Professional Learning Community (PLCs) model to ensure that all students learn at high levels.  This process keeps the district focused on students, collaboration, and results.  Through the PLC process we are able to identify the essential standards for all subjects and grade levels and have a plan in place to support students needing extra time and support or enrichment.  The Southeast school district offers engaging and highly effective instruction for our students of all ability levels regardless of the personal challenges our students may face in life. We strive to prepare our students to succeed in their post high school academic and work pursuits, all while supporting each and every student to help him or her succeed. As students often tell us when they come from a large school, we notice the needs of each student. That personal attention allows us to provide support and help to each and every student in our district.  Our school community believes in and works to achieve our district vision:
