SEK Women Helping Women: A Fairy Godmother's Fund

Goal: $12,000.00

Specific Need

Women Helping Women:  A Fairy Godmothers' Fund (WHW) is an idea that grew from several local women who saw the work of similar programs in Salina, Manhattan, and Lawrence, Kansas. WHW supports women who are suffering and are in a financial crisis. Through an application process, women needing assistance not available in our community can receive help from the fund. WHW helps with car repair, dental care, household goods and appliances, and a host of other possible needs.  As southeast Kansas has a higher poverty level than the rest of the state, the  need is great here, and single mothers are likely to be living at or below poverty level. Many applicants for our grants live only on Social Security or disability payments.

Mission

The mission of Women Helping Women is to offer financial assistance with grants of up to $500 to help women in southeast Kansas with one-time needs that cannot be met by existing agencies.

Profile

Mission Statement and Policy

Mission: The mission of WHW is to offer financial assistance to local women with one-time needs that cannot be met by existing agencies.

We have helped with buying beds, fixing cars, dental work, and even new applicances.  WHW is the last resort for women in emergency situations.

After applying through one of our partner agencies, Safehouse, the Salvation Army, or the Community Health Center of Southeast Kansas, a woman may receive no more than one grant per year with funding going directly to the agency and then to the vendor or service provider who meets the approved need. Checks are issued by our financial sponsor, the Community Foundation of Southeast Kansas.

WHW funds grants in Crawford, Cherokee, Labette, Bourbon, Neosho, and Allen counties.
